Resumen:

Abstract
The oceans are the core of our planet, providing us not only with water, but with food, energy, materials and even most of the oxygen we breathe and their very careful management is a key feature for a sustainable future. Thus, the very special importance of Sustainable Development Goal n14 in order to achieve many of the other SDGs. Within SDG 14, we can find the target “to support small-scale fisheries” and the 2022 International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture provides an important milestone to assess progress towards achieving this goal and share related small-scale fisheries good practices around the world. The terminology may mislead us, as small-scale fishing is not “small” at all in importance. On the contrary, Small-Scale Fishing has, in fact, a huge impact not only on the number of fish catches for human consumption but also in the number of fish workers jobs involved. As the FAO Voluntary Guidelines states, Small-Scale Fisheries contribute about two-thirds of catches for direct human consumption. Among these good practices in Marine Planning, we want to highlight the ones derived from contribution of Social Economy entities, as they can become its centrepiece. SE entities have proved to be a successful way for achieving different objectives related to job creation, inequality reduction, local investment promotion or responsible social and environmental protection as regards the support of small-scale fisheries. Thus, the purpose of this paper is precisely to share the success stories of different types of SE entities in the case of the EU (fishermen guilds, foundations, associations and cooperatives) in the implementation of this last target. Empowering sustainable small-scale fishing (SSF) through public policies towards SE entities can be most instrumental for its achievement.
